Union County, NC - Sheriff
Home Sheriff Menu07-10-2025 Victim Rescued, Kidnapper in Custody After Violent Domestic Assault
Yesterday afternoon around 6:00 PM, deputies with the Union County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home in the Unionville area to investigate a reported kidnapping that had occurred roughly two to three hours before the 911 call was made.
Upon arrival, deputies met with the victim’s parents, who explained that when they returned home and could not find their adult daughter, they immediately called 911. They later learned that she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old Logan Calaway, who forcibly took her from the residence against her will and fled the scene in her vehicle. After fleeing, Calaway threatened the victim with a knife while still in the vehicle. At the time of the incident, the victim had an active Domestic Violence Protection Order in place against Calaway.
UCSO deputies, detectives, and crime scene investigators immediately launched a coordinated investigation, utilizing every available investigative resource. Detectives accessed multiple law enforcement databases and technology systems, including the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and FLOCK Safety license plate reader technology. These efforts ultimately led investigators to locate Calaway in Bennettsville, South Carolina, with the victim still inside the stolen vehicle.
Thanks to the timely mutual aid request made by UCSO personnel and the swift response of the Marlboro County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office, Calaway was quickly taken into custody, and the victim was safely rescued. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of visible injuries sustained during the assault.
UCSO detectives, deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s High-Risk Enforcement, Location, and Detection (S.H.I.E.L.D.) Unit, and crime scene investigators immediately traveled to South Carolina to meet with the victim and take custody of Calaway, ensuring he would be returned to Union County to face justice for his actions.
As the investigation progressed, detectives discovered this was not Calaway’s first violent encounter with the victim. On June 2, 2025, Calaway reportedly assaulted and kidnapped the same victim in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was arrested at that time and charged with Second Degree Kidnapping, Assault by Strangulation, and Misdemeanor Stalking. Despite the severity of those charges, a magistrate in Mecklenburg County set a secured bond of only $45,000, allowing Calaway to secure his release approximately one week later.
Following this most recent incident, Union County Sheriff’s Office detectives secured multiple new felony charges against Calaway, including Attempted First Degree Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Violation of a Domestic Violence Protection Order, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Stalking, First Degree Kidnapping, Assault on a Female, and Assault by Strangulation.
Early this morning, Calaway appeared before a Union County magistrate for his initial court appearance. He was placed under a $1,000,000 secured bond, a clear reflection of how seriously Union County takes domestic violence and violent crime offenses. UCSO detectives, alongside the Union County District Attorney’s Office, were present in court to advocate for the victim and ensure her voice was represented.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey addressed the case this afternoon, stating, “This young woman suffered unimaginable violence at the hands of someone she once trusted. I’m proud of the relentless work our deputies, detectives, and partners in South Carolina put in to bring her home safely. Union County has zero tolerance for domestic violence, and this case should serve as a message to offenders, if you hurt someone in this county, we will track you down, and we will hold you accountable.”
