Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle that crashed into a guardrail in front of the Bridge Restaurant in Hemby Bridge and then fled the scene. Witnesses were able to provide video footage of the damaged red Mazda, along with its license plate information.
Using this information, deputies identified the vehicle's owner as Christopher Newell, who had a suspended driver's license and multiple extraditable warrants out of South Carolina.
A search of the area led deputies to the abandoned vehicle, which had its license plate removed. While they searched the area on foot and with a drone, a Lyft driver leaving the area caught their attention, and a traffic stop was conducted.
While speaking with the driver, deputies observed a male hiding on the rear floorboard of the vehicle. Christopher Newell was arrested and transported to the Detention Center without incident.
He was issued a $100,000 secured bond and remains in custody.
