This past weekend, members of the Union County Sheriff’s Office joined the Monroe Police Department and more than 400 law enforcement officers from across North Carolina for the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg in support of Special Olympics North Carolina.

Together, they carried the Flame of Hope from J.S. Dorton Arena to the State Capitol in Raleigh, helping raise awareness and support for the incredible athletes of Special Olympics North Carolina. Along the route, officers were joined by Special Olympics athletes who helped carry the flame and inspire everyone involved.

Our Dual Sport Unit was also on hand throughout the event, helping lead the way and ensuring the run remained safe and enjoyable for all participants.

Later that evening, UCSO deputies participated in the Circle of Hope ceremony, helping officially open the 2026 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games. It was a powerful reminder of the strong partnership between law enforcement and Special Olympics and the impact we can make when we come together in support of inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity for all.
