The Union County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize two incredible young ladies for their quick thinking, bravery, and selfless actions during a dangerous situation last month.
On April 30, 2026, at approximately 3:15 PM, Mandi Tarr, a 10th grader, and Joella Meadows, a 12th grader, who attend Porter Ridge Highschool were traveling on Unionville Indian Trail Rd. just past Secrest Shortcut Rd. when they noticed smoke and flames coming from underneath a vehicle directly in front of them. Without hesitation, these young women sprang into action.
They pulled alongside the driver, Sharon Maggard, who was unaware her vehicle was on fire and told her to pull over. Thanks to their efforts, Sharon was able to safely pull to the side of the road before the situation became even more dangerous.
Mandi and Joella then quickly approached the vehicle and urged Sharon to move away, warning her that the car could explode. Moments later, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
Sharon had left all of her belongings inside the car, including her phone and purse, but these girls stayed calm and compassionate throughout the event. They had Sharon sit in their vehicle while they called 911 for assistance.
These young ladies represent the very best of our community, and we could not be prouder of them for their heroic actions. We plan on awarding them the UCSO Good Samaritan Award in the near future.
