Over the weekend, members of the Union County Sheriff’s Office were honored to take part in the 6th annual Wounded Heroes Day. It was a meaningful opportunity to join our community in recognizing and supporting those who have sacrificed so much in service to our country.

Observed each year on April 24, Wounded Heroes Day honors U.S. service members wounded in combat and acknowledges the continued sacrifices made by them and their families. The day was inspired by the story of SGT Michael Verardo, whose courage and resilience continue to impact so many.

This year’s event brought together leaders, families, and community members in a shared commitment to remembrance, service, and acts of kindness. We are grateful to have played a small part in such a powerful and important day.

Sheriff Cathey spoke about the great work the Independence Fund does on the daily basis and how Sarah Verardo is instrumental in this work. He also talked about what real heroes are and highlighted our service men and woman and the sacrifices they make for our freedom.

There was also a groundbreaking ceremony for the Heroes Courtyard that will be a permanent place of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for generations to come.
