Sheriff Cathey and the men and woman of the Union County Sheriff's Office send our condolences to the family and friends of James Arthur Smalls Sr.

Mr. Smalls served as a Detention Officer with the Union County Sheriff’s Office from May 16, 2006, until his retirement on June 30, 2011.

Before joining UCSO, he worked as a Correctional Officer with Right Turn of North Carolina, a Parole Officer in Washington DC, and a Special Policeman at the Library of Congress. He also counseled Veterans in the early 1970s and inmates in the Work Release Program in Washington, DC.

Mr. Smalls served in the U.S. Army from 1965–1967, reaching the rank of E-4. He was a Vietnam Veteran and worked as an Aircraft Armament Repairman.
